Picture This Photo Contest for November

EndoftheLine4This month’s Picture This Photo Contest is the last one for 2009. With the winter months settling in, we decided to let the competition rest a bit so that it can return next spring raring to go. For this month of November, we are delighted to have another all star photographer judging the contest. Joshua McCullough is the creator of PhytoPhoto, a specialist collection of expertly identified botanical, horticultural and environmental photos: images supplied to a wide variety of print mediums. Once you click on his site, you’ll be hard pressed to leave it: his work speaks for itself. I’m sure you’ll agree that he is the perfect judge for this final Picture This Photo Contest of 2009.

 Joshua has chosen a subject that is provocative, intriguing and exciting. So, without further ado, here is what Josh has to say about his selection, THE END OF THE LINE.

“I am excited and honored to jury Picture This for November. Judging by the absolutely super quality of previous winners, I am very much looking forward to each of your entries! In keeping with the seasonal spirit of last month’s theme “Abundant Harvest”, and encouraging as much individual interpretation as possible, I’ve selected the November theme, END OF THE LINE. This may be presented metaphorically, such as in the final push of a last dahlia out of a battered heap of leaves and stems or a last clinging leaf: as well as images showing the end of this year’s garden.

It can also be interpreted in your photos literally: using lines as strong components of the image, such as a distinct branch or stem or perhaps the terminus of a perspective or a linear structure. A top prize will be awarded for best symbolic use of the theme as well as a literal use: but photos combining both interpretations will receive the highest commendation. As an example, a landscape of trees in fall color would be good, but a shot sighting down a pair of train tracks curving away into that scene of autumn glory would be great! A row of corn with one last ear in focus… a dangling vine with a single fruit hanging forlorn at the end. Got it?

So there you have it! THE END OF THE LINE  is a challenging and beguiling subject, coupled with a magnificent reward. For those of you who have never participated in Picture This, it’s simple. All you have to do is select one photograph, post it on your blog, and leave us a link in your comment. We will only accept entries sent from blogs. The deadline is 11:59 pm Eastern time on Sunday, November 22nd with the winners announced on  Sunday, November 29th. Good luck to all, enjoy and get your entries in as soon as possible!

Pam is correct. Your last two photos are perfect for the contest and are absolutely magnificent. They remind me of an artist’s work who I saw years ago in Santa Fe, ( i think he was from Colorado) and could not afford to buy. You have a fantastic eye.

I have to say that more than half the fun of this “photo assignment” you give us each month is going to the other entries and admiring the stunning photography that is being done. I too enjoy this a lot and join in the entreaties for more contests during the winter. I like Helen’s ideas for themes. I was trying to think of a clever way to address the idea of the garden’s skeleton, the structure that emerges as the plants die back. For me, when I was designing the Stroll Garden, what it was going to look like in the winter months of snow and ice was almost as important as the plantings and blossom show during the growing season.

I think a lot of us may be addicted to this contest, you know. Do you want a bunch of people going through withdrawal during the harsh months of winter when we are already suffering from withdrawal from the Garden drug?

It was the end of the line for the enormous brush pile we had accumulated, from clearing (well, thinning) in the defensible zone around our Santa Cruz mountain home. My shot for the competition shows a line of volunteer firefighters from the Branciforte Fire Protection District feeding the last of the brush into the chipper!

Here’s a suggestion for a winter theme: black & white. That way, those whose gardens are still rolling along during the winter months could shoot photos of plants with black foliage or flowers & white flowers, and those with snow can come with something too. Or maybe a monochromatic theme. (E.g, Brown, brown, brown & brown.)

Hi Fran, and all.

In my opinion, these GGW photographic competitions have gained so much momentum from the garden blogging community, they have become a monthly, “must-enter” event. Your website has created a fantastic and creative on-line competitive culture. A rare culture that makes us check each others entries out in photographic and discerning detail. I have personally met so many new bloggers entering your contests, over the last few months.

My thoughts for the winter months topics are that winter does not necessarily have to play in to the subject matter, does it? What about “heat” in the depths of the cold? We all have archives, the most important thing is to keep the creativity and competitive spirit alive and vigorously kicking.

Love what you are all doing in here.
And all your collective hard work is appreciated.

I do understand the work involved in running these contests and can see why a winter break was considered. It would be nice if they continued even if the prize is just a badge. Hi Fran, With so many wonderful entries, mine may not stand a chance but, you never know.

My son and his buddies climbed Mt. Hood, Oregon in October. This is among my favorite of his photos. I love the glacial lines, perpendicular to the cliff’s grooves and the gasp as I consider the sheer majesty of it all.

I have to say that there are so many great shots entered here, I am glad I don’t have to judge. Good luck to everyone. Gets you thinking about gardening even if it is snowing outside. Prizes are certainly a perk, but they most likely are not the incentive for participating.

Here is my entry for the “End of the Line” photography contest, my first entry in this
contest ever.
This is more of the end on a line, There are definitely strong lines and an end in there!
This was taken at the end of the season in a cedar glade here in the Nashville area, it is the ultimate end of one of the many cabbage white butterflies that have flourished in this glade of a different flower, and here at the end of the line we see the grasses and the wings of the butterfly returning to the earth to nourish another generation of creatures next year, thanks for reading and looking guys- JJ
