Picture This Photo Contest for November

– Posted in: Garden Photography

EndoftheLine4This month’s Picture This Photo Contest is the last one for 2009. With the winter months settling in, we decided to let the competition rest a bit so that it can return next spring raring to go. For this month of November, we are delighted to have another all star photographer judging the contest. Joshua McCullough is the creator of PhytoPhoto, a specialist collection of expertly identified botanical, horticultural and environmental photos: images supplied to a wide variety of print mediums. Once you click on his site, you’ll be hard pressed to leave it: his work speaks for itself. I’m sure you’ll agree that he is the perfect judge for this final Picture This Photo Contest of 2009.

Joshua has chosen a subject that is provocative, intriguing and exciting. So, without further ado, here is what Josh has to say about his selection, THE END OF THE LINE.

EndoftheLine2

“I am excited and honored to jury Picture This for November. Judging by the absolutely super quality of previous winners, I am very much looking forward to each of your entries! In keeping with the seasonal spirit of last month’s theme “Abundant Harvest”, and encouraging as much individual interpretation as possible, I’ve selected the November theme, END OF THE LINE. This may be presented metaphorically, such as in the final push of a last dahlia out of a battered heap of leaves and stems or a last clinging leaf: as well as images showing the end of this year’s garden.

EndoftheLine

It can also be interpreted in your photos literally: using lines as strong components of the image, such as a distinct branch or stem or perhaps the terminus of a perspective or a linear structure. A top prize will be awarded for best symbolic use of the theme as well as a literal use: but photos combining both interpretations will receive the highest commendation. As an example, a landscape of trees in fall color would be good, but a shot sighting down a pair of train tracks curving away into that scene of autumn glory would be great! A row of corn with one last ear in focus… a dangling vine with a single fruit hanging forlorn at the end. Got it?

Share with me your photos that say the season has come to the END OF THE LINE.”

And as always, this month’s stunning  reward is from David Salman at High Country Gardens: a magnificent Amaryllis Charasima in a Talavera pot.

AmaryllisCharasima-&-Talavera-Pot[1].jpg-HGC November Reward

It would look gorgeous on anyone’s mantle, table or windowsill throughout the holidays and winter months.

So there you have it! THE END OF THE LINE  is a challenging and beguiling subject, coupled with a magnificent reward. For those of you who have never participated in Picture This, it’s simple. All you have to do is select one photograph, post it on your blog, and leave us a link in your comment. We will only accept entries sent from blogs. The deadline is 11:59 pm Eastern time on Sunday, November 22nd with the winners announced on  Sunday, November 29th. Good luck to all, enjoy and get your entries in as soon as possible!

Here is my entry. Interesting yet difficult topic this month!

http://www.eastsidepatch.com/2009/11/picture-this-photo-contest-%E2%80%9Cthe-end-of-the-line%E2%80%9D/

I look forward to these competitions starting up in the spring again, though I have to say, I really think we need these to get us all through the winter tough, blogging months?

Looking forward as always to seeing all the entries and interpretations.

ESP.

Philip-
It may have been challenging for you but the photography you sent in is awesome…compelling subject and photographically stunning..

You may be right about the winter months being a good time to do this. Will give some more thought to it! Fran

Tracey November 6, 2009, 1:18 pm

Hi there GGW,

I would love to be considered! With the last photo in this blog post.

http://lifeinsugarhollow.blogspot.com/2009/11/afternoon-following-mountains.html

What a fun topic and I think the challenges of capturing landscapes and gardens in the winter would be terrific and second Philip’s thoughts!

Tracey

Dear Tracey-

Pam is correct. Your last two photos are perfect for the contest and are absolutely magnificent. They remind me of an artist’s work who I saw years ago in Santa Fe, ( i think he was from Colorado) and could not afford to buy. You have a fantastic eye.

Secondly, perhaps you and Philip will help Nan and me to re-think the winter respite for Picture This.
What would be the subjects you would be interested in pursuing over the winter months? Fran

Nadia Quiros Horvath November 6, 2009, 10:32 pm

http://nadiaknows.com/2009/09/30/aloha-plumerias/

The last of my plumeria blooms are beautiful and also sad, since I will have to wait another year to enjoy these amazing flowers.

Dear Nadia-
Thanks for joining in the fun at Picture This. You will need to select one photo to be used as your entry. We don’t judge multiple photos BTW, I love plumerias as well. Fran

Mr. McGregor's Daughter November 7, 2009, 11:30 am

I’ve ventured outside the garden for this month’s entry and had some deep thoughts along the way.
http://mcgregorsdaughter.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line-picture-this-photo-contest.html

MMD-
Wow! What a fabulous, creative and yes, humorous photo…plus the photo itself is excellent! Fran

eliz November 7, 2009, 10:27 pm

The roses in this post could be taken at any time of the year, I guess, but this is truly their last bloom–and not even a full bloom, really.
http://martagon.blogspot.com/2009/11/finality.html

Dear Elizabeth-
The photo of your roses are fantastic! Thanks for participating this month. By the way, Josh of PhytoPhoto.com, who is the judge this month, sent me ‘The End Of The Line’ concept at least a month ago. He is an extremely creative, skillful and talented individual. We feel lucky to have him joining us this month.
Fran

Craig @ Ellis Hollow November 8, 2009, 6:21 am

Figured I’d get my entry in early this time: http://www.remarc.com/craig/?p=766

Dear Craig-
I love it!! It’s as if the ivy has limbs that are stretching out all over the place….and the red color is a standout. Of course, the fact that it is on Cornell’s campus helps out. My sister graduated from Cornell and I spent a large part of my childhood living in Rochester. Am still in love with upstate New York….Good luck with the contest! Fran

healingmagichands November 8, 2009, 2:48 pm

Oh boy oh boy! a subject where we can play on words as well as try to envision the perfect photo. I’ve already started playing with this one, and I really appreciate the challenge.

http://healingmagichands.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/sunday-saunter/

Healing Magic Hands-
I am so impressed with the amount of time and contemplation that you, along with several others, have put into deciding which of your photos best captures this month’s challenging and yet incredibly compelling theme. Well done….love the old shoes and bedraggled sedum, along with that re-bloomig iris. Well done! Fran

Linda/CTG November 8, 2009, 9:20 pm

I couldn’t resist!

Linda-
You said it all with ‘it’s truly the end of thel line’. Great photo! Fran

Helen at Toronto Gardens November 8, 2009, 11:30 pm

This is the first time I’ve had the courage to submit an entry – very much in awe of the winners to-date. Here’s my photo:

http://torontogardens.blogspot.com/2009/11/gardening-gone-wild-picture-this-nov.html

Dear Helen,
Am so glad you’ve thrown your hat into the ring. You’ve got yourself one heck of an entry….creative, great photography and truly a feeling both metaphorically and visually that is indeed the end of the line. Good luck! Fran

Helen at Toronto Gardens November 9, 2009, 7:24 am

As an addendum, for possible winter Picture This topics, how about three months with these themes: Sleeping (Dec., when for many the garden is in dormancy); Dreaming (Jan. when we need dreaming most); Waking (Feb., and the earliest signs of spring)?

Dear Helen-
Provocative and creative ideas. Will certainly use them in making our decision. Thanks for your input! Fran

healingmagichands November 9, 2009, 10:41 am

I finally had my entry photo dropped in my lap this morning. I hope you enjoy my entry as much as I have enjoyed the hunt for the perfect shot.

http://healingmagichands.wordpress.com/2009/11/09/picture-this-the-end-of-the-line/

I have to say that more than half the fun of this “photo assignment” you give us each month is going to the other entries and admiring the stunning photography that is being done. I too enjoy this a lot and join in the entreaties for more contests during the winter. I like Helen’s ideas for themes. I was trying to think of a clever way to address the idea of the garden’s skeleton, the structure that emerges as the plants die back. For me, when I was designing the Stroll Garden, what it was going to look like in the winter months of snow and ice was almost as important as the plantings and blossom show during the growing season.

I think a lot of us may be addicted to this contest, you know. Do you want a bunch of people going through withdrawal during the harsh months of winter when we are already suffering from withdrawal from the Garden drug?

Dear Healing Magic Hands,
First, I am quite envious of the layout of your veggie garden and the fact that your crops are still giving you lots of good stuff. The photo is stunning and you got everything in it that you wanted to.
Great story as well. Fran

Country Mouse November 9, 2009, 10:52 am

It was the end of the line for the enormous brush pile we had accumulated, from clearing (well, thinning) in the defensible zone around our Santa Cruz mountain home. My shot for the competition shows a line of volunteer firefighters from the Branciforte Fire Protection District feeding the last of the brush into the chipper!
http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line-for-brush-pile-fire.html

I’ve enjoyed viewing the other entrants’ photos thus far – thanks for putting on the competition – it’s great fun!

Country Mouse-
What a fun and smart selection for this month! I especially love the fact that the firefighters are in there doing the chipping. You gave me a good laugh! Fran

Tracey November 9, 2009, 11:06 am

Hi there Fran!

Thanks *so* much for your encouraging thoughts on my photos! I live somewhere so beautiful – that it makes taking photos a lot of fun and constantly keeps me inspired.

I love-love-love Helen at Toronto Gardens’ ideas for the winter-themed photo contests. Sleeping – Dreaming – Waking . . .

Mr. McGregor's Daughter November 9, 2009, 12:39 pm

Here’s a suggestion for a winter theme: black & white. That way, those whose gardens are still rolling along during the winter months could shoot photos of plants with black foliage or flowers & white flowers, and those with snow can come with something too. Or maybe a monochromatic theme. (E.g, Brown, brown, brown & brown.)

Melody November 9, 2009, 12:54 pm

How fun these contests are!

Here is my entry:
http://merriemelody.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line-pic-for-contest.html

I hope that you decide to do more throughout the winter months, but if not I’ll be seeing you in the spring!

Dear Melody,
Beautiful, beautiful…well done…perfect selection for theme of the month. I’m impressed that you’ve homeschooled 6 children for 10 years. That is a huge undertaking. I admire you for doing it! Fran

Susie November 9, 2009, 2:58 pm

Wow what beautiful entries already! Here is my entry to a thought provoking theme this month.
http://poppyandsage.blogspot.com/
I too would like to see the contest continued through the winter months. We have such mild weather here in Southern CA that it is lovely to see winter shots in other areas. Thanks to Gardening Gone Wild for hosting & good luck to all the entrants.

Dear Susie,
The thought that you put into the subject matter this month is impressive. The broken lines of the pavement combined with the sole autumn leave is beautiful coupled with simplicity. Thanks for your thoughts on continuing with the contest throughout winter. Fran

Yvonne at Country Gardener November 9, 2009, 3:55 pm

This picture with this post fits your theme “the end of the line.” http://www.countrygardenerblog.com/2009/11/urban-myth/

The entry pillers with their little barns were on their last legs at the time. They have now been replaced with new brick pillars, so it was “the end of the line” for them.

Dear Yvonne,
I’m glad you took Susie’s advice and entered this photo into this month’s Picture This Contest. Most unique subject, love the angle of the shot and the photography is excellent. Your article on the myth or urban living in Toronto was quite interesting also. Thanks for participating! Fran

Jill-O November 10, 2009, 12:37 am

I must say, I’ve had a great time participating and will look forward to future contests in the next year. Here is my entry:
http://jellyfishbay.wordpress.com/2009/11/10/end-of-the-line-photo-contest/

Dear Jill-O
What can I say?? Breathtaking? Am not sure that aptly describes the photo. But it took my breath away!
And thank you for your appreciative words. We will look forward to having you participate in future contests.
Fran

ESP November 10, 2009, 12:54 am

Hi Fran, and all.

In my opinion, these GGW photographic competitions have gained so much momentum from the garden blogging community, they have become a monthly, “must-enter” event. Your website has created a fantastic and creative on-line competitive culture. A rare culture that makes us check each others entries out in photographic and discerning detail. I have personally met so many new bloggers entering your contests, over the last few months.

My thoughts for the winter months topics are that winter does not necessarily have to play in to the subject matter, does it? What about “heat” in the depths of the cold? We all have archives, the most important thing is to keep the creativity and competitive spirit alive and vigorously kicking.

Love what you are all doing in here.
And all your collective hard work is appreciated.

ESP.

ESP-
Thanks for your very kind and supportive words. Your input is important to us. Because of the many posts and e-mails we’ve received about continuing the contest, Nan and I are trying to reconfigure it for the winter….we’ll see what we can do! And we love your presence on GGW! Fran

Kathy November 10, 2009, 10:42 am

Well, I decided I would enter this time, so here is my post:

http://gardeningfornature.blogspot.com/2009/11/picture-this-photo-contest-it-really.html

The first picture in the post is my entry. Thanks for the contest theme, it is a great one!

Kathy

Dear Kathy…
Super….you’re taking the literal approach…i like it! Fran

Christine November 10, 2009, 10:54 am

How fun! It would be such a shame to be a first timer only to wait months for the next contest! (Hint, hint)

My entry can be found here:

http://idoradesign.blogspot.com/2009/11/garden-sculpture-from-garden.html

Christine-
Am delighted that you decided to join the fun. Great photo…and I love that you have 2 interpretations for how it can be seen. Good stuff! Hope to see more of you whenever the contest continues. Fran

marmee November 10, 2009, 11:10 am

what a thought provoking theme…
here is my entry.
i too would like the contests to continue throughout the winter months.

http://thingsilove-marmee.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line.html

Dear Marmee-
And what a thought provoking and creative photo. It also has a sense of whimsy and nostalgia to it.
Thanks for entering. Fran

Layanee November 11, 2009, 7:41 am

What fun. Love all those photos. Here is one for consideration:

Layanee-
It’s a keeper. Great subject matter…it brought me back to my childhood but up close and with perfection in the detail. Fran

Pam/Digging November 11, 2009, 2:21 pm

Here’s my entry: http://www.penick.net/digging/?p=5017

Like ESP, I hope you keep up the fun competitions through the winter. It doesn’t get very cold or wintry here in the lower South, so I also hope the winter themes don’t depend on having snowy pics. 🙂

Dear Pam-
As a regular in this competition, I’m glad that you are still finding it compelling enough to enter. Alliums wit seedheads are one of my faves: You captured it beautifully. Fran

Barbara November 11, 2009, 2:41 pm

I wasn’t going to enter this time but with our deck-removal project in full swing, thought the topic most appropriate for me.

http://wildsuburbia.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line-for-deck.html

Dear Barbara,
The photo says it all. Beautifully captured and great selection of subject matter. Thanks for entering! Fran

Laura Livengood Schaub (InterLeafer) November 11, 2009, 4:35 pm

This is my first entry in the GGW Photo Contest – the last bulb in a row of tulips that I’m putting in for next spring.

Dear Eric,
For a first timer, you entered with a bang. Love the subject matter as well as the photography. Good luck and am delighted that you’re participating in the contest! Fran

Brenna November 11, 2009, 6:26 pm

Dear Brenna,
To see that muhly up close with its pink inflorescence captivated by the breeze is divine! The quality of the pictures that we are receiving is going to make the judge’s job very difficullt….yours included! Fran

cityslipper (small kitchen garden) November 11, 2009, 10:39 pm

Another first-timer. I’ve enjoyed looking at past entries, and finally got organized in time to post something of my own:

End of the Line at Your Small Kitchen Garden

Daniel-
Am glad you’re joining the fun: and with a beautiful photo. Love those pampas grass juxtapositioned near the tree with the light coming through. Good luck! Fran

Diane McCarthy November 11, 2009, 11:03 pm

http://www.bintgoddess.com/2009/11/november-picture-this-photo-contest.html

Horizontal lines, vertical lines, firing lines. What more does a photo need?
I haven’t entered a photo contest in a while but I still love looking at the entries; I hope they can continue all year round!

Dear Diane-
Magnifique…you really captured a moment in time with this photo. Thanks for entering!! Fran

Jean at Dig, Grow, Compost, Blog November 12, 2009, 10:04 am

I love your Picture This contests as they’re so much fun and yet I always learn something.

Here’s my entry: http://www.diggrowcompostblog.com/2009/11/picture-this-end-of-line.html

Dear Jean,
Congratulations on winning best Louisiana blog! That’s great. Was delighted when I saw your photo…it’s a photo that makes me want to be there: walking through the drift of daffos. with the ragged barn behind it. I love it. Thanks for entering! Fran

Leslie November 12, 2009, 6:02 pm

Thanks for continuing to encourage all of us to see the beauty of the world with fresh eyes.

Here is my entry for this month: http://dragonflyseye.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line.html

Dear Leslie,
You have captured a moment in time…of perfection…your photo says it all. Thanks for participating this month. Fran

Susan November 12, 2009, 8:57 pm

This was a thought provoking challenge.
I have chosen this photo as my entry

http://suz-beginagain.blogspot.com/2009/11/the-end-of-the-line.html

Dear Susan,
The description of what you were trying to convey was meaningful with so many ways of pulling meaning from it…..and your photo was subtly beautiful. Fran

Frances November 13, 2009, 5:09 am

We do so hope you continue these fun contests!

Here is my November entry:

Christopher C NC November 13, 2009, 11:11 pm

So sorry Fran, I will be having a contest within a contest since I was unable to decide which photo to choose as my single entry.

http://outsideclyde.blogspot.com/2009/11/you-decide.html

I will let my readers decide which one will be submitted and identify that picture in the post by November 21st at 11:59pm eastern time in time for Joshua to judge.

I do understand the work involved in running these contests and can see why a winter break was considered. It would be nice if they continued even if the prize is just a badge. It is so enjoyable to look at and read all the other entries. The participation is likely to remain high even without the swag.

Grace November 14, 2009, 6:53 pm

Hi Fran, With so many wonderful entries, mine may not stand a chance but, you never know.

My son and his buddies climbed Mt. Hood, Oregon in October. This is among my favorite of his photos. I love the glacial lines, perpendicular to the cliff’s grooves and the gasp as I consider the sheer majesty of it all.

rosey pollen November 14, 2009, 9:37 pm

Hi,
There’s a first time for everything and this is my first time to enter! I love the theme you have chosen, so much potential with last hoorays of the season.
I am entering my photo of an abandoned house/structure because I can only imagine it was the end of someone’s stint of living in the mountains.
Thanks.
Rosey

joco November 15, 2009, 4:41 am

Again such a wonderful task is set us. It has given me great pleasure to think this one over carefully.
In the end the metaphysical aspect won. Even the absolute final ‘end of the line’ can be beautiful.

Thank you so much GGW for all the extra effort you put in besides all your other time-consuming posts, and thank you to the judges for taking such care in their evaluation.

I am grateful to healingmagichands for acquainting me with this contest way back in the Spring as well as making me aware of the GGW site as a whole.

My entry is at: http://joco-photo.blogspot.com/2009/11/end-of-line.html

It was the end of the line but not quite. I’d like to enter the 4-part image of stamens.

Thanks so much for your care and idea Joshua

Frances November 16, 2009, 11:54 am

Hi Fran, in case you didn’t get the comment on the post asking for ideas about continuing the contest through the winter, the photo I would like to be judged is the last one of the Ferngully post.

Hello,
I love this contest! I saw some great entries for this decievingly simple theme, but I had to give it a try, so here is my entry for this month’s contest: http://hobbygradina.ro/2009/11/20/the-end-of-the-line/

Hello, and thank you for hosting this. It is my first time here, and I appreciate being among so many wonderful people and their great photographs.

Great contest and so many wonderful entries, I guess it’s time I finally joined the fun. Thank you for the opportunity! Oh and I agree with the others, please continue the contest through the trying winter months ahead.

Here is my entry:

I have to say that there are so many great shots entered here, I am glad I don’t have to judge. Good luck to everyone. Here is my entry http://blog.gardenshoesonline.com/index.php/gardening-gone-wild-picture-this-photo-entry-1121/ PS. Seems like a great idea to continue into the Winter. Gets you thinking about gardening even if it is snowing outside. Prizes are certainly a perk, but they most likely are not the incentive for participating.

What a great subject this is.

I’ve published my entry here on my “Florida” blog instead of my garden blog this time.

I also hope the contest continues through the winter months. It is so fun to see all the creativity and interpretation the entrants have. Good luck to each one.

Thank you. Meems

I finally put together a picture for the contest! Even with no physical prize the contest would still be worth doing just to see all the great photos everywhere!

J.J. Cedar Glader November 21, 2009, 11:09 pm

Here is my entry for the “End of the Line” photography contest, my first entry in this
contest ever.
This is more of the end on a line, There are definitely strong lines and an end in there!
This was taken at the end of the season in a cedar glade here in the Nashville area, it is the ultimate end of one of the many cabbage white butterflies that have flourished in this glade of a different flower, and here at the end of the line we see the grasses and the wings of the butterfly returning to the earth to nourish another generation of creatures next year, thanks for reading and looking guys- JJ

Do I earn any extra consideration for waiting until the last possible day to submit? I think my procrastination fits with the theme. Here is my photo:

wow! A bit daunting to have to scroll down to number 66 for my entry. Have had a good time deciding on a photo for my entry—glad I saw the Facebook that the contest ended tonight, in my mind it was Nov. 30th. So here is my link – http://thequeenofseaford.blogspot.com/2009/11/novembers-ggw-photo-entry-end-of-line.html

I’ve not had much chance to get out with the camera this month, but this photo I took back on the summer solstice at Barnsdale Gardens made me think of the “The End of the Line”.

This is definitely a tricky contest, and this is my first time entering. I had to stew on a few photos before committing due to the incredible entries so far.

This is great fun. I’m all for continuing the contests through the coming months on whatever basis works for the hosts. This month’s theme was fun to think about in various contexts. Here is my entry… the last picture on this posting http://macgardens.org/?p=1253

Thanks again for hosting.
