An Interview With Jacqueline van der Kloet

One has only to experience Jacqueline van der Kloet’s personal garden, The Tea Garden, to understand why she is known as one of the premiere bulb designers in the world. When I visited in mid-April, even with a 2 week delayed bloom time due to an unusually cold winter, it was lush, exuberant, almost sweet, yet paradoxically strong. The roundish circular flow, with winding pathways and evergreens judiciously placed, immediately gave a sense of order. Upon walking through an unassuming gate, I was met by large sweeps of narcissus and yellow tulips as the lead players and the majestic Fritillaria imperialis dotted about; I felt as if I had been transported to a spring wonderland. Locus Flevum: A Modern Walled Dutch Garden

It was the end of  a long day. After seeing 8 other gardens in less than 48 hours, with some long stretches of traveling time, I was ready to pack it in. Walking into a graveled courtyard with a minimalistically styled residence, an orangery with a garden shop, a narrow, rectangular pool,  surrounding light colored walls and large olive trees in sunken tubs, it was easy to imagine being somewhere in the Mediterranean.

I knew that we had entered a property that would evoke a strong response.

Picture This Photo Contest for October

After having completed 6 months of what we initially said was an experiment, we can confidently say that Picture This has not only become a fun and much participated in contest but has also evolved into a photographic resource for gardeners who want to learn about more about specific plant material. So, a big thank you to all who have participated and continue to participate in Picture This. And for those of you who haven’t yet done so, this month is a perfect time to get your feet wet and select a photo to throw into the ring.
