Yr welcome Fran. And it was fantastic to experience his garden in that season when everything merges with the grass seedheads that by this point, really dominate the planting. If anyone is curious, I caught something of the spirit of the day: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43560604@N03/set
BTW: I'm up in Toronto where Piet designed a planting for our botanical garden in 2006. Quite a treasure.
Thx again.

Simply marvellous writing.

I did get to Hummelo for a visit in that magical time in early September for Grass Days and it was unspeakably moving and insightful.

I also had the chance to meet Piet and your impressions are spot on: a humbler man I've seldom encountered and I also sensed a concern for the fate of his gardens—that they are known and understood.

Tony-
thanks for your comments. i would imagine that by september, piet's garden is glorious. it's always nice to hear such wonderful comments about a well known and talented individual. fran

Thanks for this great series on Piet and how he approaches his garden designs. I especially like the first picture of the post, with the steel blue standing out among the blackened stems. The descriptions of his work with his clients are very enlightening and show the depth of his human kindness.

Kathy-
Am glad you liked it. The first photo you mentioned is certainly a 'keeper'. And yes, Piet's design process and personality are robust and display a depth and 'uniqueness' for an artist of his stature. Fran

Thank you for a thoughtful series. Alas, there isn't a single Oudolf garden on this continent (possibly hemisphere!), so it will be a long time before I visit one!

Dear Chookie,
Until you get to travel, you'll need to satisfy your thirst for an Oudolf garden up close and live through pictures. You might want to check the seasonal walk at NYBG where the garden is photographically being updated each week to show it in transition throughout the seasons. The URL for it is at the end of the 3rd part. Am glad you enjoyed the series. Fran

Fran - Great series, well constructed. Piet's curiosity, inventiveness, and humility comes through in your writing.

He is clearly an artist, and I would so love to throw myself into his grass creations and come out with a picture or two to rival the ones that accompany your piece.

Wonderfully thoughtful & meaty!
You've conveyed most engagingly what Oudolf is all about, digging deep into his design sensibility.

Dear Alice,
I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that it gave you more of a feel for Piet and his design process. Fran

Thanks for a wonderful interview! Living outside of Chicago gives me the opportunity to visit Lurie Garden, and it is always an amazing experience, especially when you have the chance to see it more than once in the same year and witness the way the plantings evolve.

The links to his Flickr album and his website provide much inspiration, and I've already figured out how to fix a bed in my own garden that I'm not happy with. I'll be muttering "Sporobolus!" the rest of the day. (A great grass, but also a fun word.)
