Hi Nan,

Could you add my Arbor Project to your list? Thanks!

Dave

Thanks for the reminder, Dave. It's certainly a beauty! (And yes, I've voted.)

We just recently decided to make a grape arbor and so we sketched it out and 3 hours later we were done. It was simple but creative and nice. Check it out if you get a chance.

Grape Arbor

It wasn't much, but effective and unique.

Unplanned projects can be great fun, and yours looks like a good one, James. Thanks for sharing!

Nan,

I loved reading all of the posts. I now want to add arbors and pergolas all over my garden--a new one for the Bird Garden, replace the one in the Children's Garden, a new one for the Walled Garden...

Thanks,

Heirloom Gardener

As you work through your to-do list, remember to take pictures, then leave a link back here when you post them!

I've written a few about pergolas that get a bit of interest. These are all structures I've designed, and were built for clients.

Pergola's are generally larger structures, much larger than arbors.

Those 2 post with a overhead that you walk through to go from one type of space to another-that's a arbor, and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for visiting, Rick! Here's a direct link to the pergola-tagged posts on your site, for those who'd like to visit.

I've just discovered GGW through Kathy at Cold Climate Gardening and I'm eager to learn more about the GB Design Workshop. We have an arbor in front of our south facing house, over the 'piazza', or patio for those who don't live in Heath, and it is finally covered with wisteria. I love the shade, and the way it changes the quality of light in the house. The arch we built out of piping is unlovely and I have yet to find a good climber for it, but I am ever hopeful.

A hearty welcome to you, commonweeder! If you have the time to visit all the links above, you'll likely have plenty of ideas for your arch by the time you're done. Or post some pictures of said arch on your blog, leave us a note here, and we'll all descend on you with suggestions of our own favorites!

That's a good compilation of arbor/arches. I'll have to go back and look at them all!

Thanks, Dave! It was fun having a reason to read them all again. Enjoy!

I loved this topic. It is wonderful to have all the posts together because I found several I had missed. Such great ideas everyone has. Vines...I need vines and ....

...and bines, and lianas, and ramblers, and more! After the arbor/arch/pergola/bower/gazebo muddle, I'm a little relieved that no one addressed the technical differences among the climbers. Though maybe someone wants to take that on? In the meantime, yes, think vines!

That's interesting, I always thought arbors were arched or smaller structures through which you enter on a path, and pergolas were over sitting areas.

I wish I could have participated in this design topic, but have neither in my garden. It was inspiring to read and see others pictures though.
Thanks, Nan.

I guess we'll leave the definitions to the designers, Robin. We all seem to know what mean, anyway. Next month's topic is much less complicated, and everyone should be able to participate in some way, if they wish.

Hi Nan,

Thanks for linking to my two posts about roses and arbors. The definitions put forth by Gardens Illustrated are really interesting. Who knew that an "arbor" was a place to sit? Well, at least one of mine follows the accurate definition. Thanks for the info.~~Dee

Hi Dee! I found you through some comments you left on other posts and wanted to make sure you were included.
