I am, of course, pleased that Fran described the garden with such enthusiasm and generosity. As reagrds the Echium, yes it is Echium pininana and it does grow all over Mendocino. That's a problem. It's a beautiful exotic plant that seeds itself far too widely. We at MCBG are taking steps to control it as much as possible including not recommending it for areas where it will grow out of control and,if you do grow it, to be sure to dead-head it before it sets seed. Much of this may be closing the stable door after .... etc. but we have to try.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, especially in the gardening world! When you mentioned the size of the plants I was reminded of my reaction when I visited Butchart Gardens...everything looked gigantic! Thanks for sharing your pictures.

It seems there will be many benefits from this new alliance both for the gardens and the gardener. Lovely tour.

Am glad you enjoyed the photos. Those were literally the tip of the iceberg.....you are right. I think it will be a good alliance. Fran

A wonderful garden tour. Those plants do look grand growing to such large sizes.

Lisa-
Thanks. I am always amazed when I travel to areas where these plants grow to their 'maximum' size. It gives me pause for thinking in terms of growing more natives, not only for the environment, but because the specimens will be healthier and larger. Fran

How interesting. I just visited and posted on the Strybing Arboretum down in San Francisco but many of our observations are the same--the climate is so fantastic for gardening that "the plants look like they're on steroids". The Strybing also has a very naturalistic layout. Walking through it is like being lost in the woods in Paradise.

After reading your post on GGW, I immediately got onto your blog to read your post. Thanks so much for that peak into Strybing. It looks utterly magnificent!! Fran

The Mendo Bot has been an old haute of mine for the past 25 years.
I hope Chris will appreciate and honor the beauty of the many different gardens that were designed and sculpted by his equally talented predecessors.

The echium species in your photo is pininana.
A old time favorite of mine and one that is found growing wild all over downtown Mendocino along with E. fastuosum and E. wildpretti.

Nice photos of the garden. I enjoyed your photo tour.

Michelle-
Thanks for your post and for notating the echium. I did see it all over Mendocino...for years, I have wanted to grow it here on the East coast and have tried to germinate it from seed, only to be frustrated wit hthe little seedlings quickly died off after being planted outside. Am not surprised that this garden is one of your hang outs. BTW, your web site is elegant. Everyone who reads this post should take a few minutes to get on and check it out!
Thank you for the garden tour and the insight into its evolution under Chris's stewardship. Your photos show one beautiful scene after another. I'll have to add this garden to my list of must-sees

Pam-
Am glad you enjoyed the tour. It will be fun to see what additions Chris makes to this already magnificent garden over the coming years. Fran
